Great idea and work![]()
I've seen these before, and I've bought a complete assembled one before but had not built one.
So I found a used kit on the book of faces, I just happen to have a few 231 tcases laying around( first pic is the parts required) this is a basic kit nothing fancy.
Next you take a 231 transfer case apart you only need the front half with the planetary set( it makes the low range function).
Now you bolt the large plate with the block off plate to the front portion of the. 231 that is going to be used as the crawl box. One it is bolted in draw a line that will be your guide for the following steps
Okay this is where it gets dicey you need to take a sawzawll/ cut off wheel or hacksaw ( your choice) and cut the front out put of the 231 that you are using for this crawl box off.
Once the front out put is gone you can get the block off plate installed it needs to be welded so 1: you don't have any fluid leaks and blow up your range box and 2: so you increase the structural rigidity of the range box.( I have not accomplished his yet I do have a local guy who is willing to give it a go with his fancy Tig welder)
At this point the range box is external modified as much as is nessisary.

It should bolt right up as long as it is a dodge or jeep transfer case
Lucked out and found a terralow 4:1 planetary set for a 231, so now I 1 of my doubler set ups will have
1:1, (2wd&4wd)(rear case in 4wheel high)
2.72:1(2wd&4wd)(front case engaged)(rear in high)
4:1 (4wd only)(rear case in low)
10.88:1 (4wd only)( both cases in low)
Six options 4 speeds I like it

Turns out dude had no clue what he was talking about, turns out it was just a long spline 2.72:1, had it been a 6 pinion I would have kept it, so it's on its way back. I've had 3 local guys look at the Spud shaft but none want to take on the project of actually attempting to make one.
Have an appointment Friday with a different guy that can cut splines on axle shafts so wish me luck hope he can make them.

Ordered a shift rod from boostwerks engineering, hope that gets me heading in the right direction for shifting the crawl box tcase combo.

Dropped off 2 of my crawl boxes at my buddy's to have him tig weld the block off plates in place. Also started assembly of the nwf crawl box I bought.
My buddy is a vet who lost both legs above the knee, he has really got into welding and was super stoked to work on something with a practical application. So I will likely be getting my roll cages welded together by him also, looking at the 4xinnovations cage for the 4runner

Dang that is cool. Question, for simplicity and those that don't have access to a way to weld cast aluminum how do you think drilling and tapping a few holes would work to hold it together with a good sealant?
If you think hard liquor is your answer..... Please talk to me.
Actually that's not a bad idea, the only issue I see is that the cast aluminum is already the weak point, drilling it I suspect would only weaken it more. But then again I'm not a metallurgist.i do have a spare case in the garage that I could attempt to drill and tap and we have a pretty strong sealer at work that would add to the rigidity.
