if you have read any of my posts you will know that I am getting real close to being able to retire (18 months). as you may know I work for the USPS. there is a job opening in Childress TX and I put in for it and got it. my wife is from a small community called Kirkland that is about 10 miles SE of Childress down 287 towards Fort Worth. I have worked in Childress from 1998-2002 and 2004-2006 so I do know the community and operations there. I left because I was what we call a PTF (Part Time Flexible) and I left to get more hours since I was a single dad at the time. I am now a regular guaranteed 40 hours a week. but my kids are grown and have left and it is just my wife and I. We got married in 2014. so if I got back it would be as a PTF. the schedule is 30 hours one week and 36 the next and then 30 then 36. it just flip flops back and forth. I would keep all my benefits such as insurance, retirement and such. I used to work in the plant in Lubbock processing the mail and transferred to a small town to get off nights and work fewer hours. but I have been going in at 5:30 am and leaving between 5-7 pm now 6 days a week for over a year. so I would work less and have more time to devote to my hobby.
then there is the housing situation. I love my house here. I live out in the country (38 miles to work) and have a nice brick home with a steel roof and 3 shops. BUT I bought my house in 2010 and refinanced in 2013 so I would be well past retirement before this is paid off. my payment is about $1000 a month. My wife's mom lives in the country and has it in her will that when she passes my wife gets the house and a 24x40 Quonset hut shop. my wife called her mom to tell here we were thinking of moving back and her mom said if we did she would go ahead and give my wife the house and we could live there as it was becoming too much for her to keep up with the mowing and different stuff. so, not having a house payment would be a big offset to not working as much and losing hours. I would miss my shops but the plan is to use some of the equity from selling this house to build another shop that has a lift and is dedicated to working on rigs as opposed to being a storage.
I have told my wife we would still need to set up an escrow account and have some taken out of every check and deposited to be able to pay the insurance and taxes. we also need to get some insulation in the house as her electric bill is rather expensive running the air conditioning. it is a decent house, not nearly as nice as mine now but to have that burden of the house payment off my back would sure be nice. it also needs some repairs on the outside as when my father in law was alive he wouldn't make the outside look nice (much to the chagrin of my MIL) because he said they would raise his property taxes.
one of the main motivations for this contemplated move is family. as stated my wife's mom lives there and they are very close. my wife has 3 kids, 2 that live there also plus 2 grandkids. I have 2 boys from a previous marriage that live right across the border in Oklahoma about 30 minutes away. together they have 5 grandkids. then my parents live in Shamrock which would be about an hour away, I have one daughter that lives in Lubbock I used to be real close to but since she got hooked up with a guy that just got out of prison she doesn't contact us or return phone calls or texts. my other daughter is in the Air Force so no telling where she will end up. plus, we had planned on moving anyway when I retired, just speeding up the time table a little.
and another thing is debt. I am currently around 40k in debt. stupid I know but what is done is done and at the time it was my only option. and yes, I realize I have well over 40k in toys. even with working all these hours it seems we are just living and not really getting ahead. we would use the equity from selling this house to pay off all the debt. which would help with less hours and getting ready to ease into retirement.

so there it is.

I don't know. The new OIC starts tomorrow. He will need me to show him how to run the office. I am thinking December 6th will be my last day in Slaton. Take off a week and then start in Childress and then take off in January to move.
